How to Make More Leads and Sales
How can I make more leads and sales with my website traffic? That question plagues many affiliates. They think that since their websites are getting good traffic; and a decent percentage of affiliate program clicks, then they should be generating a lot more leads and sales than they currently are.
Not necessarily.
A website can draw a large share of traffic and never; or rarely, generate a lead or a sale.
Why?
If you've ever shopped at a Wal-Mart, you are familiar with the long checkout lines. Even if the lines aren't long, there's always a customer stepping up, ready to check out. And, you'll also notice a rack or two of 'impulse' items (bubble gum, candy bars, magazines, keyrings and similar little odds-n-ends) at the register. These are called 'impulse' items, because normally people don't go to the checkout to browse for more merchandise. They are ready to check out and go home. But; in hopes of making more sales, the store places items at the check out to entice customers.
What does that have to do with website traffic conversion?
Although there's a nearly endless stream of customers checking out and eye-balling these impulse items, not many people actually buy any of them. That's like a website that draws a lot of traffic but makes few leads or sales. The few leads/sales that are being generated are merely 'impulse' actions. The visitor didn't come to the website for the products/services advertised on it, they came for some other reason yet became lured by the affiliate program link(s).
Look at it this way... If you have a website with pages of articles about relationships, the bulk of natural traffic you'll get from search engines will likely be people seeking advice about relationships. So, if you place; for example, payday loan ads on the site, the leads/sales you generate will primarily be through 'impulse', because your visitors didn't come to your website to look for a payday loan. Your visitors just happened to spot the payday loan ad and thought 'what the heck' and applied.
There's at least one other reason why a website can have good traffic but poor lead/sale generation...
In desperation to earn revenue, some affiliates resort to sloppy advertising or pay for garbage traffic.
By slopping advertising we mean exchanging links with non-relevant websites and confusing search engines as to exactly what it's true category is. Another example of sloppy advertising is link placement which is sure to generate clicks (visitors) that are not targeted. An example would be placing a funny video on another website with a link-back that invites visitors to view more funny videos, yet all your sponsor affiliate program links on your website are for products/services unappealing to your visitors. Or, you post an article about teen modeling, yet all your website ads target products/services such as arthritis medication or airline tickets or something else that doesn't appeal to your visitors.
As for garbage traffic, that's when affiliates pay for traffic that isn't worth the money spent, or was poorly spent. In the first example, let's say you paid a company that guaranteed a certain amount of traffic. How do you think they get that traffic to visit your website? Do you think they hand-pick each visitor, to ensure each and every visitor is specifically seeking a product or service you advertise? No. In fact, many such companies PAY the visitors to visit you! They charge you 5 cents per visitor, then they pay 1 cent to the visitor for clicking-through on your link. You just bought garbage traffic.
Focus. Find. Forget. Funnel. Best ways to increase leads and sales:
- Focus your website content to match the category of ads you will host.
- Find websites that target the same customer traffic you desire, and get your link installed. If you want people who are looking for dating services, then put your link only on dating websites.
- Forget about buying traffic. We're not saying to stop keyword bidding, we simply advise against buying generic, untargeted traffic.
- Funnel your exit traffic towards impulse offers. If you offer; for example, a free newsletter, on the signup page (or on the thank you for signing up page), list other free offers whether from you or from your per lead/sale sponsors to get the most out of each visitor.
